The Portals Project is an environment for non-objective exploration using simple hypertext linking. It was constructed before anything other than very simple interactive web tools existed. It was titled "The Portals Project" long before the term portal came to refer to web sites such as Google or Yahoo. (Note that it was designed for 640x480 screens so will probably look tiny on your high-resolution devices.)
